Study at Home / Time

Find the hour you already have

Nobody has spare time. Everybody has displaced time.

Advice to make time for study is not actionable for somebody working full-time with a household. The available hours are not spare; they are currently occupied by something, and the real question is what gets displaced and whether that is sustainable.

The honest exercise is to identify what specifically will not happen during the course. Less television, a dropped commitment, a lower standard of housekeeping, less social time, or earlier mornings and the sleep that costs. All of those have consequences and pretending otherwise leads to a plan that quietly fails.

The one displacement that reliably backfires is sleep. Sustained reduction degrades exactly the capacities study requires, and study conducted while chronically short of sleep takes longer and retains less, so the traded hour is worth less than it cost.

The most commonly available block is early morning, and it works for a specific reason: it happens before the day has had a chance to take it. An evening slot competes with everything that went wrong that day.

The other benefit of frequency is that it removes the decision. A session that happens at the same time on the same days becomes something you do rather than something you choose, and the choosing is what fails on a difficult evening rather than the capacity.
