Space matters more than people expect

Not an office. A place where study is what happens.

Studying wherever there is room means the environment carries no signal, so every session begins with clearing space, gathering materials and settling, which is overhead and is also a moment at which the session can fail to start.

A dedicated corner, even a small and unimpressive one, removes that. The cue is doing more work than the comfort: sitting there means studying, and that association forms within a couple of weeks and does a surprising amount of the motivational work.

Where no space is available, which is a real constraint in shared or crowded housing, the substitute is a portable arrangement that sets up in a minute: one bag with everything in it, so the setup is not a barrier. Libraries and other public spaces are the other answer and they add travel.

The other environmental factor is interruption. Study conducted in a shared living area is punctuated, and punctuated study takes considerably longer per unit of material, which is a cost usually attributed to difficulty of the material rather than to the setting.

There is a specific way to get ahead that works better than general effort, which is to complete one entire assessment before the course reaches its topic. It is harder, it takes longer, and it means that from that point the student is permanently operating with a buffer rather than trying to build one from an even position.
